Breaking News: Ex-Longhorns WR Johntay Cook II Faces Misdemeanor Charges After Arrest in Texas

Former Texas Longhorns wide receiver Johntay Cook II was arrested on Tuesday morning in Fort Worth, Texas, facing misdemeanor charges of property theft and interference with public duties. According to Fort Worth police, Cook allegedly entered a drive-thru, reached inside the window, and stole someone’s car keys. After leaving the location, officers later made contact with Cook, who did not comply with their demands, leading to his arrest. The stolen keys were recovered.
Cook, a five-star recruit from DeSoto High School, was among the nation’s top wide receiver prospects in the Class of 2023. He committed to the University of Texas, where he appeared in 14 games during his freshman year, recording eight receptions for 136 yards. In November 2024, Cook and the Longhorns mutually agreed to part ways. Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian stated, “We have nothing but respect for [Cook] and his family. We wish him the best of luck in his future endeavors.”
Following his departure from Texas, Cook announced his transfer to the University of Washington on December 28, 2024. However, his tenure with the Huskies was brief, as he left the program in January 2025 for unspecified reasons.
As of now, Cook remains in custody at the Lon Evans Corrections Center in Fort Worth. Bond details have not been disclosed. The situation marks a concerning development in the young athlete’s career, which has seen significant transitions in recent months.
