In a recent and unfortunate turn of events, Florida Gators’ starting quarterback, Graham Mertz, has been ruled out for the remainder of the 2024 season due to a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his left knee. The injury occurred during a non-contact play in the third quarter of Florida’s 23-17 overtime loss to the Tennessee Volunteers on October 12, 2024.

Mertz, a redshirt senior who transferred from the University of Wisconsin in 2023, had been a pivotal figure for the Gators, leading them to a 5-6 record in the 2023 season and returning as the starting quarterback in 2024. His leadership and experience were instrumental in guiding the team’s offense throughout the season.

Following the injury, Mertz expressed his disappointment over the team’s recent struggles and hinted at internal factors contributing to their downturn. While he did not specify individuals, his comments have sparked discussions about accountability within the program.

In Mertz’s absence, true freshman and five-star recruit DJ Lagway has stepped into the starting quarterback role. Lagway’s debut as a starter was marked by a 48-20 victory over the Kentucky Wildcats, where he threw for 259 yards and rushed for an additional 46 yards. His performance, alongside fellow freshman running back Jadan Baugh, who rushed for 106 yards and five touchdowns in the same game, has provided a glimpse into a promising future for the Gators’ offense.

As the Gators navigate the remainder of the season, the focus will be on addressing the internal challenges highlighted by Mertz and supporting the development of their young talents. The team aims to rally together, build resilience, and strive for a strong finish to the season, honoring Mertz’s contributions and leadership.
